What It Is
(it is what it is and it ain't what it ain't)

The Mission Statement
Dailies, in association with PushPush Theater, unites filmmakers to explore their craft through community and creation. We challenge film artists of all disciplines to focus on process as the result. Great work evolves from experimentation, practice, and finally understanding. By creating a safe place to fail, and focusing on process over product and collaboration over isolation, Dailies is where one finds a voice - not simply to display it, but to nurture and develop its existence. We are here to learn, grow, and play as a means to master our skills. We offer our work to the world as a byproduct of our mission.

The Concept
Dailies will host four or more quarterly filmmaking challenges each year with a central theme, image, story idea, style/genre, or other set of "rules" that unifies all the work. This concept is not meant to be a gimmick or hook; instead, it is designed to focus on the creative process and to push artists into areas their individual non-Dailies work may not typically take them. Each challenge will include a comprehensive project manifesto declaring its purpose and method for creation. A project point producer will organize filmmakers and manage the overall scope of the challenge. Each filmmaker will create a piece of work utilizing any means necessary to fulfill their vision of the challenge at hand. By engaging in workshops, discussions, and work-in-progress screenings with group analysis, filmmakers will partake in a collaborative process aimed at developing their skills and the skills of those around them. Upon completion, the films will be publicly screened as a Dailies project.

Upcoming Projects
(coming to a theater near you, if you live in decatur)

Dailies: Through Project
The Dailies' Project is sponsoring The Through Project; an experiment in episodic storytelling and open source collaboration. A team of writers has been working on a script which will serve as the starting point for a series of shorts, to be produced and directed by different directors over the next 6-8 months. We are now in need of writers and actors who want to take an active role in developing both the story and the characters. Inclusion in the project will be determined by your level of participation in the process. The Through Project meets every Wednesday at 7 pm at Push Push Theater in Decatur. We hope to be writing and shooting one short a month, so each meeting represents a new opportunity to come and get involved, even if you have never been before. Hope to see you there.

Past Projects
(the ones that have come before)

Dailies.01: Tirade for Three
SCREENED: Spring 2002
Three local production companies (Dulcinea, Eyekiss, POP Films), working with three casts of three actors each, had three days to put together their interpretation of a short adaptation of Murray Mednick's play Tirade for Three.

Dailies.02: Unification
SCREENED: Summer 2002
Working from "documentary" segments on a specific theme and subject, each group took one aspect of the central idea for a five-minute film. Plus, each group got the same five actors playing the same open-ended but predetermined characters and had to start its segment with the last line of dialogue from the preceding segment.

Dailies.03: Lost and Found
SCREENED: Fall 2002
A wide range of "found" texts was chosen by 9 actors, who then worked with one of 9 filmmakers. The filmmakers use the text as the basis for a short film comprised of found footage.

Dailies.04: Backstory/Back Image      • Flyer
SCREENED: Spring 2003
Filmmakers each made a short film inspired by a 1968 black-and-white photograph:

Robert Adams, Colorado Springs

Dailies.05: Unified Field Theory
SCREENED: Fall 2003
After each team wrote a story that takes place in Piedmont Park, they had to then integrate one major element from another team's story so that it changed the outcome of theirs.

Dailies.06: A Sense of Humors
SCREENED: Spring 2004
Launching from the Greek concept of the four humours — blood, yellow bile, phlegm and black bile, A Sense of Humours presents a quartet of complementary films, centered upon characters helplessly governed by their bodily fluids.

Dailies.07: Losing Control
SCREENED: Winter 2005
Writers were given specific characters to write a script for. Directors were given those scripts to shoot and the actors to fill the parts. And editors were given that footage to edit into a complete film. Filmmakers were allowed to perform all three functions, but it had to be on three different films. Thus no one person was allowed complete control over a film.

Dailies.08: Fight Scene      • teaser
SCREENED: Fall 2005
Designed for filmmakers to experience the methods and challenges in writing, shooting, and editing an action short, the hope for Fight Scene was that choreography won't end up as a last minute concern.

Dailies.09: Return to Pepperland
SCREENED: Fall 2005
A collection of short films inspired by the Beatles classic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Dailies.10: Ween
SCREENED: Summer 2006
An informal, experimental film project based on ideas you have when listening to music by the group, Ween.

Dailies.11: Dogme.AughtSix
SCREENED: Winter 2007
The Complete Dogme.Aughtsix Project Manifesto
Dogme.AughtSix is a reworking of the Dogme95 manifesto designed to eliminate gimmick and spectacle from the contemporary short film and focus on story and character in hopes of inspiring true emotion.

Dailies.12: The PSA Project
SCREENED: Spring 2007
The Complete PSA Project Manifesto
The PSA Project encourages filmmakers to identify, cold call and work with an organization to develop a broadcastable 30 or 60 second PSA with a clever tag line that encompasses the organizations mission and reaches its target audience. The filmmakers is thus challenged to convey a lot of information in a short amount of time, literally making every choice count.

Dailies: CATME.Aleph-Naught
SCREENED: Summer 2007
The Complete CATME.Aleph-Naught Manifesto
CATME.Aleph-Naught requires the filmmaker to specifically use gimmick and spectacle to reinforce the goal of a film; here-to-fore referred to as spectimmick, 3 and to incorporate specific established filmmaking techniques to make a film.

Dailies: Fairy Tales     • teaser
SCREENED: Winter 2008
The Complete Fairy Tales Manifesto
Dailies: Fairy Tales requires the filmmaker to create a world separate from our own that relies on magic and fantasy elements for its existence.
